Administered under strictly controlled conditions by a trained psychiatrist and an anesthesiologist in a postoperative room setting, a brief application of electric stimuli is used to produce a seizure lasting generally less than one minute. If a patient does not respond to the standard procedures, there are options of utilizing augmented techniques to enhance the ECT response. Treatment series are tailored to each patient’s needs.
