What Is PrEP/PEP?
PrEP is a new preventive treatment that keeps HIV-negative people from becoming infected. PrEP is a pill you take once daily or an injection you take bi-monthly and discreetly to stay HIV-negative. Used in conjunction with condoms, it is highly effective in preventing HIV infection. PrEP prevents HIV in people that may be at risk of getting the virus.
Studies have shown that PrEP works for:
- Heterosexual women and men
- Sexually-active gay and bisexual men
- Injection drug users
PrEP
PrEP is a discreet way of allowing you to have more control over your sexual health. PrEP is available in two options, a pill form which is taken once daily or via injection every other month.
Our PrEP staff can also assist you with the following:
- Assistance with insurance navigation to cover your medical visits
- Assistance with accessing medication
- Connecting you to resources in the community
- Safe sex education, free condoms, lubricants, dental dams, etc.
PrEP can help protect anyone whose partner has HIV, or anyone who doesn’t know their partner’s HIV status. Similar to any other daily medication, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV with one pill a day.
PEP
If you have been exposed to HIV you also have the option to take PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) within 72 hours of your exposure to prevent being infected with HIV.
