Internal Medicine Residency

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. John’s Riverside Hospital offers ACGME accredited three-year categorical and one-year preliminary medicine tracks. Both tracks are community based and designed to train knowledgeable, compassionate, and efficient physicians.

Our program incorporates clinical, practical and didactic input from our medical staff and a wide array of healthcare teams, including nursing, social workers, nutritionists, administrators, physical therapists, risk management, performance improvement, medical informatics and other members.  The goal is to have each resident grow into the role of a well-rounded, independent practitioner. Throughout their training, residents are mentored and guided by expert clinician-educators. Our training program provides rigorous hands-on experience in managing a wide variety of problems and diagnoses. Graduates of the program are well prepared for careers in general internal medicine, both primary care and inpatient medicine, as well as for fellowship in any of the internal medicine subspecialties.

We also value the role of the physician as an educator. Throughout residency, house staff have an opportunity to work with medical students from our affiliated medical school and learn to become physician-educators. Given the size of our residency program, there is an undeniable sense of camaraderie and mutual support among the residents leading to life-long friendships and opportunities for future professional collaborations.
