A leader in minimally-invasive surgery
Our operating rooms are equipped with the latest, minimally invasive technologies to perform a wide range of procedures including: urological, neurosurgical, vascular, gynecological, orthopedic, otolaryngologic, opthalmic, oculoplastic, and general surgical cases. St. John’s Riverside Hospital has invested in the Stryker Navigation System and Zeiss Microscope that allows our surgeons to operate with the utmost precision. All 12 operating rooms are equipped with the PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System), which allows the surgeon to digitally view radiology images taken at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. With PACS, physicians are able to make more informed patient care decisions. Also new in our OR is the state-of-the-art surgical table, made of carbon fiber and no metal parts, which allows the surgeon to take x-rays while the operation is ongoing. This acquisition has been instrumental in performing minimally invasive abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.
Ambulatory Surgery
Preparing for one-day surgery begins with your physician who schedules the operation. On the day of your pre-admission testing/education, you will proceed to the Admitting/Registration Department. Following registration, the pre-operative nurse will complete certain paperwork, draw the required blood work, complete an EKG (if ordered), and escort you for a chest x-ray (if required). The pre-admission testing nurse will talk to you one-on-one about preparing for surgery, what to expect after surgery and necessary pre-admission paperwork. Prepared, educated patients have a much faster recovery from surgery and are far more satisfied with their care. If you are unable to keep the appointment, your physician’s office will have to reschedule.
da Vinci Robotic Surgery
The newly-acquired da Vinci robot, at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, enables our surgeons and our surgically affiliated doctors to offer state-of-the-art minimally invasive options to their patients. This sophisticated robotic platform delivers nearly scarless surgical results in areas such as colon-rectal, bariatric, gallbladder, gynecological, and general surgeries. A multi-dimensional system, the da Vinci robot allows surgeons to perform complex surgeries with unprecedented precision and accuracy. St. John’s Riverside Hospital recognizes the benefits of investing in technology allowing for better patient outcomes.
The patient benefits of da Vinci single-incision minimally invasive surgery over traditional “open” surgery are many and include:
- Minimal scarring at the incision site
- Significantly improved “pain threshold”
- Shorter hospital stays
- Improved recovery times
- Decreased risk of infection
St. John’s Riverside Hospital remains true to the tradition of offering patient-centered care. With the da Vinci Single Incision Robot System we are improving patients’ surgical experience and getting them home to their families faster.
These investments make the St. John’s Riverside Community Stronger
