Frederick Horsley

BHS Detox & Rehab Patient

34 years old and I am from Bronx, NY.

Following a string of family losses, I sought solace in alcohol and rapidly became an alcoholic. I started waking up with shakes that could only be soothed by alcohol, and next thing I knew, I was having seizures. Following two seizures in a month, I knew I had to undergo medical detox. I initially visited Mount Sinai, where I was sent to St. John’s Riverside Hospital’s ParkCare Yonkers detox program.

I was nervous entering—I’d never been to rehab. But the moment I arrived; the staff treated me so well and made me feel safe and loved. After detox, I realized I needed more time to heal, so I entered their 28-day rehab program. The staff were so caring, they were like a family.

During rehab, I learned effective coping strategies and developed a genuine understanding of how substances impact the body and mind. Sessions were not only led by counselors but also doctors, nurses, and AA members, giving us medical information as well as actual-life advice. I was also introduced to a solid support group that would help me to succeed once I was out of the program.
I’m outpatient now. I also attend AA and am stronger, more confident, and committed to recovery.

This was the second time I’ve been at St. John’s for alcoholism. At first, I was ashamed about returning, but the people there did not judge me in any way. They were supportive and encouraged me for seeking help before it was too late. That kind of support made everything.

For any individual struggling with alcoholism, I would strongly recommend St. John’s Riverside Hospital. They stand the best chance of long-term recovery. Sitting in those chairs, I went from being a stricken alcoholic to a successful life. St. John’s didn’t fix me—St. John’s treated me as if they were my own family. And that truly changed the course of my life.
