Radiology

At St. John's Riverside Hospital we offer leading-edge technology, comfortable facilities, and an experienced and friendly team of technologists and board-certified radiologists. To expedite your care, diagnostics are available to your physician quickly, via our secure PACS System. When experience matters most, know that our board certified radiologists interpret over 130,000 images a year.

We offer the following digital exams:

      CT scan
      CT Vascular Angiography
      MRI
      Ultrasound
      Interventional Radiology
      General Radiology
      Vascular Ultrasound Doppler Studies
      Bone Densitometry
      Nuclear Medicine
      Gastro-intestinal Studies
      Barium Enema Studies
      Hysterosalpingogram
CT or Ultrasound biopsies including breast
      Stereotactic Biopsies

Convenient Scheduling:

To schedule an appointment call our Central Scheduling Department at 914-964-4329.

Our hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 6 pm. Saturday 8 am to 1 pm.

We do accept patients on a walk-in basis, however, to avoid waiting we highly recommend scheduling in advance.

RADIOLOGY EXAMS

ULTRASOUND- Ultrasound imaging involves scanning portions of the body using high frequency sound waves which create images of soft tissue structures. During the procedure, a small amount of water based gel is applied to the area being examined to enhance the image. A device called a transducer is gently applied against the skin which allows the images to be captured. An ultrasound exam is non-invasive and there is virtually no discomfort during the procedure.

CT SCAN- Computerized Tomography, known as a CT scan uses a series of x-ray images allowing the computer to take this data and create a 3 dimensional image of the area. The scan is fast, detailed and painless. A benefit of the CT scan is its ability to image bone, soft tissue and blood vessels simultaneously. Unlike a MRI, a CT scan can be performed if the patient has an implanted medical device. The CT scan is usually the first test requested for information it can provide for cancer due to its ability to confirm the possibility of a tumor, its measurement in size and location. At St. John's, the 64 slice CT scan can perform specialized studies including 3D reconstruction of the vessels within the body (CT Angiography).

NUCLEAR MEDICINE-
We offer a full range of Nuclear Medicine diagnostic exams including Nuclear Cardiology, Nuclear Stress testing, kidneys, bone, thyroid, liver, lungs, including GI bleeding exams. The specific injected isotope travels through the body to the particular area needed and provides images of the area.

BONE DENSITY- One way to diagnose bone loss and determine a patient s risk for fractures is to conduct a bone mineral density (BMD) test, also known as bone densitometry. This exam measures how much calcium is in the patient s bones and usually target the spine, hip or wrist, the most common areas of bone loss related fractures. If the results show a decrease of calcium or osteoporosis, the physician can prescribe appropriate treatments.

MRI- Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the perfect tool to see soft tissue in the body. It uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to provide pictures of organs and structures of the body. The detail of the spine, knees, shoulder, brain, or abdomen, far exceeds CT in detail for soft tissue. St. John's Riverside Hospital's MRI unit provides state of the art technology and the most current software.

MAMMOGRAPHY- St. John's Riverside Hospital has completely converted to digital equipment for mammography. The detail of digital imaging is also vastly superior for dense breast and implants. St. John's has both large and small plate imaging to accommodate full figure patients. Another wonderful feature is the S.O.F.T. paddle used during compression. The paddle angles to accommodate the muscle at the chest wall to reduce the feeling of "burning." This angle paddle also provides better detail imaging of the complete breast decreasing the recall of patients for additional imaging.

PICTURE ARCHIVING SYSTEM (PACS) - all studies are saved in the hospital's Picture Archiving System (PACS) allowing the images to be transferred between hospital locations. Using PACS, the radiologist can view your exam at the hospital on computer monitors and your physician can view your images in their office. In addition to the PACS system, SJRH has added the computer-aided detection system (iCAD) which allows the computer to take a 'second look' with the radiologist to prompt subtle density changes within tissue.
