Diagnostic Testing: 914-964-4386/4486

EKG (electrocardiogram)
is a recording of the electric current produced by the contraction of the heart muscle. The tracings are recorded on a machine by placing electrodes on the chest and extremities of the patient. It is a painless test that requires no specific preparation and is performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Call central registration at 914-964-4329 to make an appointment for your EKG.

Echocardiogram/Doppler Study
This state-of-the-art digital echocardiogram uses ultrasound (high frequency sound waves) to produce detailed images of your heart. The images are obtained through the use of a transducer and gel. The Doppler portion of the test is recorded utilizing the same transducer and records any abnormal blood flow associated with the heart valves. This test is painless and is performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Holter Monitor
is a continuous electrocardiogram that records every heartbeat for the length of time you are wearing the monitor (usually 24 hours). The monitor is a small, light-weight box about the size of a portable radio. Five electrodes are attached to your chest for the duration of monitoring.    A pouch with a shoulder strap is provided with the monitor for your comfort.

Stress Testing
is a vital diagnostic tool in the care of the heart. The stress or exercise test is used to see how the heart performs when it is asked to work harder. While the patient is walking, he/she is connected to EKG equipment so that the heart rate and rhythm can be monitored.

Another type of stress test is a medication-induced stress test. If a patient is unable to walk, a medication (persantine) may be given to produce the effect on the heart as though the patient were exercising.

To make the stress test more specific, a Myocardial Perfusion Imaging stress test may be performed. This test involves an injection of a small amount of radioactive material (MYOVIEW or Thallium) which circulates in the bloodstream and shows if your heart muscle is receiving adequate blood supply under stress and/or rest conditions. This test is performed in our nuclear cardiology department.

Pacemaker insertion is performed at St. John's Riverside Hospital by one of our Thoracic Surgeons working with your Cardiologist.
