an Alternative To Surgery

Interventional Radiology

The Interventional Radiology Center at St. John’s Riverside Hospital provides an alternative to surgery that will enhance your overall quality-of-life by significantly reducing specific procedures’ risk, pain, and recovery time.

The Interventional Radiology Center Medical Director specializes in these potentially lifesaving procedures performed under imaging guidance without the need for major surgery.
Our Interventional Radiologists utilize catheter-based embolization, ablation, and angiography techniques, to reduce the need for Surgery.
Interventional Radiologists are the pioneers of minimally invasive modern medicine. They can often open blocked or narrowed blood vessels using angioplasty, stenting, or thrombolytic techniques.
Advancements in Interventional Radiology include (See Below)
• ONCOLOGY | CANCER TREATMENTS
• WOMEN’S HEALTH | FIBROID TREATMENTS.
• CARDIOVASCULAR | ARTERY AND VENOUS DISEASE.
• ORTHOPEDIC | CHRONIC BACK PAIN.

Additional procedures include thermal and cryogenic ablations to treat cancerous lung, renal cell, liver, and bone tumors. Other advancements include minimally invasive pain management techniques for chronic back pain.
Interventional radiology is a series of medical breakthrough treatments offering reduced risk, pain and faster recovery than open surgery.

ONCOLOGY | USING INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY TO TREAT CANCER
Interventional Radiology uses a highly localized technique that addresses challenges commonly associated with other cancer treatments by delivering a chemotherapy agent or radiation specifically where needed.

Radioembolization is an outpatient procedure that delivers radiation beads directly to the tumor site. Interventional radiologists use a catheter to place thousands of microspheres—minute particles that emit radiation—into the blood vessels or capillaries, which feed the tumors. The microspheres become trapped, cutting off the tumor’s blood supply and destroying malignant cells inaccessible by other techniques.

Chemoembolization delivers chemotherapy through a catheter directly into the artery feeding the tumor. This allows patients to avoid side effects caused by chemotherapy circulating through the patient’s blood.

Radiofrequency Ablation and Cryoablation offer a nonsurgical, localized treatment that kills tumor cells with heat or freezing while sparing nearby healthy tissue. As a result, RFA and CRYO are much easier on the patient than surgery.

WOMEN’S HEALTH | USING INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY TO TREAT FIBROIDS

Interventional Radiology offers women a new option over having a hysterectomy or prescribing medications to relieve fibroid symptoms. The doctor performs a less invasive treatment that aims to preserve fertility.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is the minimally invasive answer to life-disrupting fibroids. Through a small nick in the groin, interventional radiologists guide a thin catheter into the uterine arteries that supply blood to the fibroid tumor. Tiny particles are injected to block the flow of blood to the fibroid. With no blood supply, the fibroids shrink and die.

Uterine Artery Embolization is for women experiencing heavy bleeding following delivery or cesarean section. The procedure follows the same principles and techniques as UFE.

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome: Many women spend years trying to get an answer to why they have chronic pelvic pain. Varicose veins in the pelvis can cause pain and affect the uterus, ovaries, and vulva. An embolization procedure closes the vein, and patients can return to normal activities immediately.

CARDIOVASCULAR | USING INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY TO TREAT ARTERY AND VENOUS DISEASE

Interventional Radiology has many tools and procedures available to remove vascular blockages, including small balloons that stretch open the vessels, devices that extract plaque, and lasers and stents to open blocked arteries and veins.

Thrombolysis is a procedure that delivers medication through the catheter and works quickly to dissolve the clot—often within one to two days.

Balloon angioplasty opens the blood vessel where it is narrowed or blocked. In some cases, the reopened artery requires a stent or an atherectomy to open the blocked artery or veins.

Vein Ablation
By closing the great saphenous or other Superficial Veins, the twisted and varicose branch veins, which are close to the skin, shrink and improve in appearance. Once the diseased vein is closed, other healthy veins carry blood from the leg, re-establishing normal flow.

ORTHOPEDIC | USING INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY TO TREAT CHRONIC BACK PAIN

Interventional Radiology offers safe, nonsurgical treatments that have proven highly effective in reducing or eliminating the pain caused by Vertebral Body Fractures, Osteoporosis, Herniated Disks, or Spinal Tendonitis.

Kyphoplasty is a treatment for the collapsed vertebra to return it to its normal position. A balloon is inserted into the vertebra to create a cavity within the vertebral body, filled with cement to stabilize the fracture. The cement forms an internal cast that holds the vertebra in place.

Vertebroplasty, a non-surgical treatment performed using imaging guidance by interventional radiologists, stabilizes the collapsed vertebra by injecting medical-grade bone cement into the spine. This lessens or reduces pain and can prevent further collapse of the vertebra, thereby preventing the height loss and spinal curvature commonly seen as a result of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures.
